Practice Based Research Workshops for OTs: Tullamore, Galway, Cork and Dublin
Practice-Based Research Workshops for Occupational Therapists

Each workshop consists of four training days spread out over an eight month period. They are designed for occupational therapists working in clinical practice that have a strong interest in completing a practice-based research project.

Why might you be interested?
Irish studies report that most practitioners have positive attitudes about evidence-based occupational therapy practice and feel that clinical decision-making should be informed by research evidence. Many wish that more research studies, conducted in an Irish clinical context, were available. These interactive workshops will guide your learning in how to design and conduct research grounded in your own clinical practice. You will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for being not only a research consumer, but also a research producer. You can thereby make an important contribution to the development of the Irish occupational therapy knowledge base.

Course Presenters
The workshops will be facilitated by two occupational therapists with expertise in clinical practice and practice-based research.

Overall Aim
The overall aim of the workshops is to equip occupational therapists working in clinical practice with the knowledge and skills required to complete practice-based research in their clinical setting. Each participant will be required to complete a clinical research project over the duration of the workshops and to submit a written report on their completed project.

Content
The workshops will contain small group work, discussion and self directed activities between workshop sessions. Content will include:
  • Introduction to research and the importance of practice-based research.
  • Research methods and statistics
  • How to develop a research idea and identify a research mentor.
  • Ethics and moral considerations in research.
  • Writing a research proposal.
  • Data collection methods and analysis
  • How to disseminate research findings
On the fourth workshop day participants will be required to present their progress on their research project.
