AbstractAim: The purpose of the study was to explore the use of music to enhance skills acquisition in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study aims to provide an insight into the current use of music in an Irish ASD service through studying a child diagnosed with autism from the perspectives of significant others. Method: A qualitative research approach based on a case study design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the mother, speech and language therapist, key worker and pre-school teacher of the focus child, a young boy aged 5 years 6 months diagnosed with autism, to explore their use of music for skills acquisition in an Irish ASD service and preschool. Potential application of the findings: The findings of this study demonstrate the need for a comprehensive approach towards skills acquisition of a child with complex needs provided by a multidisciplinary team. When using a musical approach for skills acquisition, professionals and parents can face considerable challenges imposed by the environmental context (curricular demands, group interventions) and the child's internal factors (tolerance, preference). Implication for practice: Occupational therapists need be competent in activity analysis and environmental adaptations in order to provide holistic, client- and family-centred interventions that derive from effective multidisciplinary team working. |
