-------------------------------------
This is an interdisciplinary event beween Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) and Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland, and hosted by ISCP. The course has been funded by the HSCP Office, HSE. As such, places are available to therapists in the publicly funded healthcare service only (included S38/S39).
According to The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), each year, one in three adults aged 65 and older experiences a fall. Falls represent an evolving state of frailty and are the most common reason older adults visit emergency departments or are admitted to long-term institutional care. Data from TILDA indicates that nearly 40% of older adults reported at least one fall over a four-year period, and almost 50% experienced a ‘fear of falling’, which is an independent risk factor for both falls and loss of independence.
This study day with Tutor Ltinda Nazarko examines the factors that increase the risk of falls and what primary care staff can do to reduce risks and improve quality of life. It also addresses care and treatment following a fall, along with the management of risks to prevent recurrence. Emphasis will be placed on assessing learning needs to equip primary care professionals with the skills and knowledge to deliver evidence-based interventions that mitigate fall risks. Training will focus on recognising and managing individual risk factors, implementing innovative care pathways, and tailoring interventions to meet the specific needs of the population served.
The day aims to improve your understanding of risk factors and evidence based interventions.
Candidates attending will learn:
- Who is at risk of falls and what can we achieve by assessment and
interventions
- General assessment of risk factors such as continence, vision, mobility,
functional ability, acute confusional states and environmental factors
- Patient centred care and treatment
- The role of medication in falls and exploration of STOPP/START and Beers
criteria
- Care and treatment following a fall
- Risk management
