This one-day practical course will be of interest to OTs working or preparing to work in seating assessment and provision. The course offers an introduction to seating and wheelchairs, supporting participants to develop a good understanding of manual and power wheelchairs which will benefit them as they further develop their skills through clinical practice and more advanced training.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be introduced to the basics of wheelchairs and seating. This will include a mix of practical and theoretical information.

  • Manual wheelchairs – the training will teach participants about the basics of understanding manual wheelchairs including stability, measuring for basic wheelchair provision, common adjustments and important clinical considerations e.g. transportation, working with amputees, driving.
  • Power mobility – this training will teach participants about the basics of different power mobility base options available on the market, factors that would influence choice of power chair provided and basics of powered mobility training.
  • It is envisaged that a small portion of this training will focus on how to decide whether to recommend a power chair or a manual chair (to support development of clinical reasoning skills)

Presenter:

Andrew Semple is an OT who has been involved in seating for more than 40 years. He set up the first seating clinic in Ireland in the CRC in 1979. He also worked as a community OT. He promoted seating all over Ireland and assisted setting up seating clinics in Lebanon and Pakistan. For this work he was presented with a special award by the European Seating Symposium in 2016. He now educates Occupational Therapists and OT students in the basics of wheelchairs and seating by running hands-on workshops.
