Dr Annalisa Montesanti is a Programme Manager in the Research Strategy and Funding Directorate at the Health Research Board (HRB), Ireland’s leading funder of health-related research with a strong commitment to advancing clinical, health services, and population health research. She has managed a broad portfolio of funding schemes, including investigator led projects and programmes, career development initiatives, and European and multilateral collaborations designed to strengthen Ireland’s research ecosystem and support evidence informed policy.

In her current role, Annalisa leads strategic decision making on national research investment, working with senior leadership, to shape funding approaches that build capacity and capability across priority research areas, disciplines, and career stages. Her work includes advancing key policy developments such as reforming research assessment, through initiatives including DORA and CoARA, to better recognise diverse research outputs, impacts, and career pathways. She also contributes to organisational efforts to promote FAIR principles, Open Science, and the adoption of persistent identifiers such as ORCID iD.

Annalisa’s work aligns with international best practice, and she is actively engaged in several international groups, including those associated with ORCID, DORA, and Science Europe.

Prior to joining the HRB, Annalisa gained extensive scientific research experience in Italy, England, and Ireland. She holds a BSc from the University of Palermo and a PhD in cancer biology from the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford, and has been awarded prestigious fellowships from the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC) and the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (MSCA).

Annalisa will be sharing her knowledge and expertise on "Grants" on 24/09/2026 from 1-2 p.m.
