Course aim:

The overall aim of this course is to provide occupational therapists with advanced knowledge and skills about how to supervise effectively, enhance engagement in supervision and develop reflective practices.

Who is this training for?
The course is targeted at occupational therapists currently providing supervision or those considering taking on the role of clinical supervisor. Supervisees attending this course will gain knowledge and skills about supervisory practices, how to maximise engagement in clinical supervision, and improve their clinical practice and outcomes for service users. The course is designed regarding the standards set by CORU, the HSE and international research.
This course uses various teaching methodologies such as presentations, shared learning, and video-based vase examples of supervisory practice.

Course outcomes

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the benefits of effective supervision, the functions and core features of supervision
  • Recognise and describe different models of supervision e.g., Proctors Model of Supervision, 4x4x4 Model of supervision
  • Develop and review the importance of using a supervision contract
  • Understand how to facilitate & structure supervisory practice and recognise the factors that contribute to an effective environment for clinical supervision
  • Identify the skills necessary for building the supervisory alliance, supervisory processes, provide feedback and how to deal with conflict in supervision
  • Describe and select a reflective practice model that suits their needs such as Kolb’s Cycle, Gibbs Reflective Practice Model/Reflective Cycle, Reflective Learning Model (Bains Five R’s 2002), and Values-Based Reflective Practice Framework
  • Recognise the importance of supporting legal and ethical standards of practice relating to CORU
  • Evaluate supervisory competencies

On completion of this course participants will be provided with an E-book “Clinical Supervision that's Uplifting and Effective” as well as all the course notes, and key reference articles.

Delivery of training


The course is delivered face to face over 2 consecutive days
The format of the course may be altered should public health guidelines change or to meet the specific needs of the service.

This course will be delivered by Dr Aine O' Dea

Dr. Áine O’Dea is an experienced occupational therapist, educator and researcher, having worked for over two decades. She delivers online and face-to-face courses to put knowledge in the hands of teachers, parents and professionals. Áine is a published author of several papers in high-impact journals and a contributor to other publications in occupational therapy, clinical supervision and parent/educator coaching. In addition, Áine has co-authored several chapters in the recently published book “Supervision for Occupational Therapy: Practical Guidance for Supervisors and Supervisees”. Dancza, K., Volkert, A., & Tempest, S. (Eds.). (2022). This is a practical textbook that guides both supervisors and supervisees to make the most out of supervision opportunities.
