This webinar will provide a comprehensive, clinically grounded exploration of pressure injury prevention and the critical role of therapeutic seating in reducing harm.

With pressure injuries affecting an estimated 10% of the healthcare population, we examine their profound impact on patient outcomes, including increased hospital length of stay and significantly higher mortality rates among older adults. Despite their severity, up to one‑third of pressure injuries are avoidable, underscoring the importance of early identification and effective intervention.

The session walks through the stages of pressure injury development, explains where injuries most commonly occur, and clarifies the essential distinction between shear and friction—two mechanical forces that contribute differently to tissue damage.

A major focus is placed on pressure redistribution in seating, including how load is managed through cushion design, posture, and support surfaces. We explore the functional differences between tilt‑in‑space and recline, and how each affects pressure, shear, and overall postural stability.

Participants are introduced to the Four Principles of Effective Clinical Seating, providing a structured approach to assessing and optimising seated posture for individuals at risk. The webinar concludes with a review of key clinical research studies demonstrating how therapeutic seating interventions can significantly reduce pressure injury incidence, improve comfort, and enhance functional outcomes.

By the end of the session, attendees will have a clear understanding of the biomechanical, clinical, and practical factors that make seating a cornerstone of pressure injury prevention.
