New BSc in Occupational Therapy at University of Limerick
Significant development for the profession in Ireland
We are happy to inform members about a very significant development for the profession in Ireland. A new BSc in Occupational Therapy will be starting at the University of Limerick this autumn. This will bring the number of professional qualification programmes in the Republic to five. The establishment of this programme is a testament to the increasing demand for Occupational Therapists and highlights the vital role we play in healthcare and the other sectors where the demand for Occupational Therapy is growing.
The University of Limerick has been engaging with AOTI in relation to the new programme since early 2023 and the process of AOTI Accreditation and WFOT Approval has commenced. This will continue throughout the first 4 years of the programme and conclude in advance of the first student cohort completing the programme.
Below you will find correspondence which we are sharing from Prof Katie Robinson, Course Director of the BSc Occupational Therapy programme.
We wish the staff and students of the new BSc programme the very best as they embark on this journey.
Dear Occupational Therapy colleagues,
We are excited to share with you that the University of Limerick will be launching a new Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy program starting in September 2024. This is a significant development, as the university has been delivering a successful 2-year graduate entry MSc OT program since 2003.
We are thrilled to be expanding our occupational therapy education offerings and contributing to the growth of the OT workforce nationally. This new BSc program is designed to prepare graduates who will be competent, reflective, and evidence-based practitioners. Interprofessional education will be incorporated throughout the program, providing opportunities for students to engage in shared learning with other allied health students at the University of Limerick.
As the BSc program is introduced, the number of places on the MSc OT program will gradually decrease. We look forward to continuing to work closely with our colleagues in the practice community to support practice education for both programs.
