We are thrilled to welcome Sharon Sutherland and Jennifer McKee to present our first lunchtime webinar on 24-hour postural care considerations for the client living with obesity with focus on seating. This a live webinar for SPOTAG members and is free of charge.
The learning objectives of this live webinar are designed to provide rehabilitation professionals with a comprehensive understanding of key considerations when assessing and prescribing functional seating and related function/mobility for individuals who are obese.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and List Three Unique Characteristics
- Participants will be able to recognise three distinct characteristics specific to individuals who are obese that require careful consideration during the assessment and measurement process.
- Examples may include issues related to body mass distribution, pressure points, or unique postural challenges associated with obesity.
2. Three Features of the Back Support Needing Attention
- Participants will gain insights into the intricacies of back support requirements for obese individuals.
- This may encompass considerations such as optimal lumbar/thoracic support, accommodation of body contours, and addressing potential challenges related to posture or stability.
3. Three Features of the Seat Support Requiring Consideration:
- Participants will be equipped to evaluate and address specific seat support needs for obese individuals.
- Considerations might include weight distribution, pressure management, and the design of the seat surface to ensure optimal comfort and functionality.
Practical Application:
The webinar will provide clinical thoughts, experiences and examples, allowing participants to apply the knowledge gained to practical situations. By the end of the session, participating clinicians should feel increased confidence in their approach to assessing, measuring, and recommending appropriate seating solutions for individuals with obesity, considering their unique characteristics and needs.
We will send the Zoom link to the webinar on the 2nd July to all SPOTAG members. You can become a member of SPOTAG here https://www.aoti.ie/advisory-groups/Seating-and-Posture-in-Occupational-Therapy-Advisory-Group
